On Sunday, a massive power cut plunged Chile into darkness. The blackout affected almost 90 per cent of the population, and was caused by a high-voltage transformer failure 700 km south of Santiago.
The power went out on Sunday evening, and began to return one hour later.
According to Reuters, the blackout is a reminder of the immense tasks facing the newly inaugurated President Sebastian Pinera. The power grid remains weak after the devastating earthquake that hit the country on 27 February.
