Published: Fri, 2010-09-03 09:45The solar system, comprised of more than 35,000 sqm of roof mounted large scale collectors, has a total capacity of approximately 17 MW of hot water capacity for the purpose of district heating at the 8 square kilometer campus for 40,000 students, faculty and staff. The solar system aims to provide significant savings on fuel consumption in compliance with LEED certification standards.
The University is a flag ship project in the Kingdom valued at a $11bn project being implemented on a fast track basis. The solar system will be commissioned by the end of 2010, whereby MEI is subcontractor to a joint venture between El-Seif Contracting and Consolidated Contracting Company (CCC) that is responsible for implementing the infrastructure works (package 3) of the PNUW project, with Dar Al Handaseh as the supervising Design and MEP Consultant. MEI was awarded the contract for this specialized system after a rigorous and competitive due diligence process with international competition.
The solar district water heating system, which will be designed and installed by MEI, will support the district heating network for the entire university campus. The university campus will include student accommodation and a world class hospital
